Agricultural Science Foundation

Agricultural Science Foundation, a non-profit voluntary organization was established in the year 1981 by Late Shri K H Patilji, the then Honorable Minster for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka.

The Foundation is dedicated to social, educational and economic development of rural and urban poor. The Foundation is working in fragile agro-ecological regions of the northern part of Karnataka State. It’s focus is on natural resource management, promotion of organic farming practices, building peoples institutions by organizing them in to Self Help Groups and need based interventions for improving the livelihood of resource poor families.

Economic Empowerment of Rural Women

Development objective: Economic empowerment of rural women Self Help Groups of Gadag district
Target Area: All villages in the Gadag district
Target Group: Resource poor farm families and landless agricultural families organized in to SHGs
Immediate objective: To enhance the income of 20,000 resource poor rural women SHGs from Rs.15000 to Rs.50000 per annum
Activities:

Livelihood strengthening planning for rural women SHGs based on the available resources
Training on food processing, goat rearing, buffaloe rearing, cross bred cow rearing, vermicomposting, petty business and entrepreneurship development programme
A total of 18300 SHG members belonging to 1540 SHGs have availed loan of Rs. 29.00 crores for taking up activities of dairy, goat rearing, agro enterprises and food processing Wednesday Bazaar a small marketing outlet is initiated during 2004 for selling SHG products.
Output:

Establishment of food processing units viz., vermicelli, chili powder, and masala powder units by the women SHGs
Establishment of vermicompost units by the farm women
Goat units have been established
Women have taken up buffaloe and cow rearing activities
Women have started petty business activities like grocery shop, bangle shop, hotels and tailoring shop etc.
Outcome:

Additional employment has been facilitated to 18300 SHG members
Income of women enhanced from Rs.15000 to Rs.50000
Increased decision making capacity of women in the home
Increased capacity of credit absorption
Increased education status of children
Migration of landless women reduced
Increased status of women in the family and in the society.

Immediate objective: Increase the family income of 20000 small and marginal farmers from Rs.30,00

Agricultural Development through Promotion

Development Objective: Agricultural Development Through Promotion of Rain Water Harvesting Structure on Farmers Fields of Gadag District.
Target Area: 40 Villages of Gadag District
Target Group: Farmers Cultivating Crops Under Rainfed Eco-System and Protective Irrigation.
Immediate Objective: To Enhance The Income Of Farmers By Increasing The Agricultural Productivity.

Activities:
Conducting Awareness Programme On Rainwater Harvesting Structure.
Organising Training Programme on Rain Water Harvesting Structures (7000 farmers).
Construction of Rain Water Harvesting Structures like farm ponds & sunken ponds (2700 Nos.) check dams (16 Nos.), earthen nala bunds (2Nos.), bore well and open well recharge structures (17 Nos.), CCT (1000 ha.) and tanks (9 Nos.)
Training Programme On Maintenance Of Rain Water Harvesting Structures.

Output:
Farmers have established:
Rainwater harvesting structure on their fields.
Farmers have learnt to maintain rain water harvesting structure.
Increased soil moisture conservation on farmers fields.
Collection and storage of rain water in the rain water harvesting structures like farm ponds sunken ponds, check dams, earthen nala bunds open & bore well recharge structures, tanks etc.
2700 farm ponds harvest 85 million gallons of rain water.
52 new bore wells have been dug by the farmers in the watershed areas.
825 defunct bore wells and 276 defunct open wells got recharged.

Outcome:

Increased productivity of crops due to availability of more water.
Increased income from agriculture occupation.
Farmers have utilized stored water for protective irrigation.
Farmers have taken up vegetable and flower cultivation.
Farmers have started double cropping system due to increased moisture status of the soil.
Area under dry land mango cultivation increased.
Stored water utilized for drinking purpose for livestock.

Sustainble Crop Production

Development objective: Sustainable crop production through the promotion of organic farming
Target Area: 80 villages in the district
Target Group: Small and marginal land-holding families belonging to rainfed eco-system
Immediate objective: To improve the productivity status of soil for enhancing the family income on a sustainable basis
Activities:

Awareness camps on the importance of soil fertility
Training program on the preparation of vermicompost, compost, and bio-pesticides
Training program on usage of bio-fertilizers and planting of biomass-yielding plants on farm bunds
Demonstration of organic farming practices
Exposure visit of farmers to various sites
Training programmes on organic certification
Organic certification of farmers’ fields
Establishment of marketing outlet for organic produces
Output:

Farmers have established vermicompost units and biodigester units as a first step towards organic farming (1800 units producing 11,000 tons of vermicompost)
Efficient utilization of agricultural waste by farmers
Farmers have established biomass trees
Increased soil moisture through the incorporation of vermicomposting and biomass
Farmers have reduced the application of chemical fertilizers
Reduced cost of cultivation
Farmers have registered for organic certification
Outcome:

Sustained crop production even under long dry spells
Increased area under organic farming
Improved soil fertility status
Improved quality of agricultural produce
Better market rate for the produce
Increased income to the family
